OUR STORY

Musical pioneer Cheb i Sabbah was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer. He was advised that the cancer was spreading to his liver and left lung and that time was not on his side. Like many Americans, “Chebiji” – as he is affectionately known – does not have health insurance. Due to his weak health condition, Chebiji found himself having to cancel live shows, meaning his income stream has come to a complete halt, with mounting medical bills and future medical costs ahead.

Upon learning of his condition, a few close friends and artists have come together to rally around Chebiji and assist him with his fight. Devastated by the news and outraged that an artist of Chebiji’s caliber cannot afford to care for himself and receive the proper urgent medical treatment needed, we have set up a fund to help.

THE IMPACT

Sabbah’s influence on the global electronic music and DJ scene cannot be over estimated. He has shown two entire generations that classical world traditions can blend beautifully and respectfully with DJ Culture. Thousands have experienced his music and artistic vision through his many albums and on his dance floors – whether in Goa, Essaouira, Moscow or at Nickie’s, where he ran an eighteen year San Francisco weekly residence, we know what a beautiful gift Chebiji has been to the world at large. This is our opportunity to give something back to Cheb i Sabbah in his time of need

WHAT WE NEED

We have identified a cancer clinic in Germany that is ideally suited for Chebiji’s condition and age. We estimate a treatment and recovery period of one year during which time Chebiji will be unable to work. Our projected costs for his treatment and household expenses during the treatment and recovery period is $45,000. We hope to raise $20,000 through private donations, benefit shows and benefit albums/remix albums. We turn to you, the friends and fans to help us raise another $25,000. The breakdown of monies needed is as follows:

1. Cancer Treatment inclusive of airfare and lodging: $27,000

2. One Year of Fixed Expenses (Rent/Storage/Electric ): $18,000

PLEASE NOTE: Even if the initial goal of $25,000 is met before the deadline of August 15, 2011, you may continue to donate in order to help Chebiji reach the overall goal of $45,000.

22º of Beatitude, The Canadian Tour

….And we hit the road to tour Chaiwalla’s latest release 22º of Beatitude by Tarun Nayar. Expect Tarun’s show to be a multimedia-heavy exploration of the album’s material. Through live visuals and performances, the show will bring to life the people and places that inspired Tarun in his travels. Also touring with Tarun will be visual artist, Electrabelle, master percussionist and drummer Dave ‘Sharmaji’ Sharma (Sub Swara, NY) and glitch-hop duo BPM (Rup Sidhu and Nadia Chaney). The show promises to range from bhangra to drum’n’bass to chill-out. In order to give back to the people and places that have inspired him, Tarun has committed 50% of all the proceeds of 22º of Beatitude to charity. As he spends much of his time in Asia, a large portion of the funds will be directed towards building homes for the destitute, as well as supporting education, and social programs. Heartbreak and Munchi teamed up to release this EP in fall’10 titled ‘FUCK H&M’ and a specific track jumped out at us, its called ‘Chavvi’ and heres what David Heartbreak had to say about chavvi and MOOMBHANGRA!

Moombahton (pronounced /ˌmoombaˈtoʊn/) is a genre of electronic dance music that was created by American dj/producer Dave Nada ^[1] at a high school homecoming “skipping party” for his younger cousin in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2009.^[2] The specific event that stimulated NADA’s development of the Moombahton genre was his slowing the Afrojack remix of the Silvio Ecomo & DJ Chuckie song “Moombah” to 108 beats per minute. Because that tempo nears that of the reggaeton, Nada created the neologism “Moombahton” by combining the title of the track “Moombah” and the “ton” ending of the word “reggaeton” and applied it to his new genre.

36 months after the inception of this genre its being billed as the next BIG break through for dance music because of its unique flow that makes combining cumbia, house, hiphop, and reggae natural. Tarun is a hybrid, a meeting point between east and west; a cross-cultural (con)fusion. He is a classically trained tabla player, a DJ, and a producer, obsessed with fusing tradtional asian sounds with wikked electronic beats. He performs globally, trains in Mumbai, and represents the Canadian massive in Vancouver.
On March 1, 2011, Tarun releases his first full-length solo album, 22º of Beatitude. Recording sessions with artists worldwide, 22º of Beatitude brings us to temples in Bhutan, to street corners in Tokyo and even to an intimate conversation between the artist and his grandmother. Breaking out of the dancefloor-driven format, Tarun’s aim was to record as many of the sounds as possible, live, without the use of sample libraries. Each of these songs tells a story, and each story is a chapter in the artist’s life. They are a decade-long evolution of sounds that blend culture, beats and bass. With influences ranging from Talvin Singh to Bassnectar, Tarun’s music aims to break boundaries and bring people together.
As a part of Delhi 2 Dublin, Tarun has toured the globe and played some of North America’s biggest festivals. He produced their two full length albums that went to the Top 3 on the Canadian world music charts and settled into the top 10 on iTunes Canada world music charts. Tarun is also a founding member of Vancouver’s Beats Without Borders collective and has shared the stage with everyone from De La Soul to Cheb i Sabbah. His tracks and mashups get play on the CBC, BBC and college stations worldwide. In May 2010 he blended Akon’s ‘Beautiful’ with UK producer Swami’s ‘Sugarless’ in a mashup that received heavy airplay in the UK. He also recently scored ‘BAS! Beyond The Red Light’, a documentary on the lives of women in one of Mumbai’s red light districts. Together with partner Umar Akbar he also runs the cutting edge global electronica label and blog Chaiwalla’s Boombox.
22º of Beatitude will be released March 1, 2011 and will be complete with archival photos and videos that will accompany each track on the album and enhance the music into a dynamic visual experience. These visuals will be projected as part of the live show, set to hit Canada this spring. Stay tuned for dates.

My little asia in the prairies

If you met me in real life you’d be quick to discover that I am a born and raised Canadian prairie boy from Pakistani parents. The two worlds couldn’t be further apart but for me growing up with banjos and panchods I secretly knew the two worlds could meet musically. There’s a certain emotion that only folk music can evoke, it brings out the little leprechaun inside you that dances, sings and rejoices to the stories of your land. I’ve always thought of South Asian and Western folk music as one.

This fascination of two cultures turns into creative sparks when I see punjabi truck drivers hauling long loads across the prairie skies and I think “hey, this could sound like southern qawwali blues rock”, picture the black keys meet Nusrat. The denim jeans and diesel are the electric guitar and the serenity of the flat landscape are the heavenly vocals of qawwal.

So when I heard the Dharohar Project, Laura Marling & Mumford & Sons EP, I gotta say I never heard music this close to home, a home that’s simply my little Asia in the prairies.

On their debut, Sigh No More, English quartet Mumford and Sons cooked up rousing, romantic folk rock perfect for sloshed barroom singalongs, earning two Grammy nominations in the process. For this EP, they took a page from the George Harrison playbook, recording in Delhi, India, with fellow touring partner Laura Marling and a nine-member collective of Rajasthani musicians called the Dharohar Project. The result sounds like a pub band crashing an Indian wedding: “Devil’s Spoke,” which Marling originally cut as a quiet, unassuming acoustic tune, is turned into a lively foot-stomper, thanks to Winston Marshall’s banjo and Dharohar Project’s wailing vocals and clacking, polyrhythmic percussion. Mumford and Sons’ “To Darkness,” a sleepy B side, is reborn as a celebratory yawp, with new lyrics and a slow-burning backbeat that eventually explodes into joyful cacophony. The next logical step in Mumford and Sons’ career? Sitar lessons.

As you should be aware by now Darkstar released their album NORTH last month and its been met with great praise by the blogosphere BUT we got a special unreleased version of GOLD. I first heard of Darkstar’s title track GOLD last year in December and fell in love with it because it had this funky dark groove reminiscent of the 80′s but brought back into 2010 with a futuristic robotic twist. Well it just so turns out that the version I have is not the version they released. So enjoy this one its way cooler!

Sneak Peak: New Daft Punk!

When the first TRON film was released in 1982 pioneer electronic musician Wendy Carlos wrote the entire musical soundtrack. Wendy first came to recognition in the 60′s when she started recording with a fairly unknown instrument called a ‘Moog Synthesizer’ and would later lay the foundations for ambient electronica as a genre.
